Fill Rectangles with Ellipses

shapessmoothorganiccontrolellipsesproportioninteractive

Description

Improve your drawing control and master drawing organic curved forms with confidence on a clean workspace. In this practice, you are presented with exactly three randomized, non-overlapping reference ellipses of various sizes, degrees, and tilt angles directly on the canvas. Your goal is to trace or draw over them as smoothly and accurately as possible to calibrate your coordination.

Steps (steps)

  1. 1
Observe the target ellipses: Study the proportions and orientation of the three generated ellipses (flat vs. round, tilted vs. vertical).
  2. 2
Draft the curves: Ghost your pen or brush over the guides to register their shape in your muscle memory.
  3. 3
Trace with a single fluid motion: Lock your wrist and sweep with your shoulder to draw each ellipse in a single, confident revolution.
  4. 4
Practice varying degrees: Pay close attention to how much flatter or rounder each ellipse is, and try to replicate its tilt angle precisely.
  5. 5
Repeat or try another: Click the Randomize (Dice) button to get three new random, non-touching ellipses.

Tips

  • Use your shoulder: Lock your wrist and fingers. Swing from the shoulder and elbow to produce smooth, non-jerky curves.
  • Symmetry over accuracy: Keep the curvature continuous. Avoid making "football" points on the ends of your ellipses.
  • Draw through the shape: Do not stop drawing after one loop; complete 2–3 continuous revolutions to establish a confident, fluid ellipse before lifting your pen.
