Description
Develop precise control over value โ the gradual transition from light to dark. Smooth gradients are the foundation of all realistic shading: master this and every sphere, face, and fold you ever draw will feel solid.

Steps
- Draw a rectangle about 15 cm wide
- Fill the left side with your darkest possible shade โ use firm, even strokes
- Work toward the right, gradually reducing pressure with each column of strokes
- The rightmost edge should be untouched white paper
- Look for bands or jumps in the transition and smooth them by blending in the middle zones
- Repeat the gradient vertically, then diagonally

Tips
- Use consistent pressure control โ don't change stroke speed, only pressure
- Work in layers: lay a light overall tone first, then build darker areas gradually
- Avoid erasing โ build up from light to dark
- A blending stump or tortillon can help smooth transitions if you're using pencil
