Description
Improve your hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness by drawing symmetrical shapes. This exercise trains you to see relationships between points and curves across a central axis.
Steps
- Draw a straight vertical line down the center of your page to act as your axis.
- Draw a simple curve or shape on the left side of the line.
- Immediately try to mirror it on the right side, keeping the distance from the axis consistent.
- Try more complex shapes, like faces, vases, or abstract organic forms.
- Check your symmetry by turning the page 90 degrees or looking at it in a mirror.
Tips
- Focus on the "negative space" between the shape and the axis.
- Draw light, "ghosted" lines first before committing to darker strokes.
- Work from the top down to avoid smudging your work.
- Don't worry about perfection — focus on the process of seeing and replicating.
